Special Representative for the Safety of Journalists

48 journalists were killed in 2016 because of their profession, according to the latest statistics from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). When killings with the motive "so far unconfirmed" are included, the number is significantly higher: 78 media workers who lost their lives in the course of the year. The majority of them were local journalists reporting in conflict zones and covering stories such as war, politics, corruption or human rights.
